There was a special morning service at Evergreen Baptist Church Sunday, Nov. 10, with youth church in charge of the service, even the preaching. The welcome was given by Matthew Para, announcements by Ava Pointer, worship songs by Baylei Morgan, Alyssa Costello, Tatum Mabry and Chloe Vaughn. Brooke Smithey prayed, and offering was collected by A.J. Pointer, Aden Costello, Tatum Mabry and Chloe Vaughn. Philip England and Clayton Costello provided the sermon. Makenzie Mitts testified and Jaggar Vaughn closed in prayer. They all did a wonderful job. An enchilada meal was served as a fund-raiser for youth church.

Area residents were saddened to learn of the death of former Keith resident John Oscar Ru-en who died Sunday, Oct. 27, at age 87. He was born Sept. 6, 1936, to Howard and Lyla in Ostrander, Minnesota. He married in 1958 to Janis Torgerson and they were married 61 years. They moved to this area in 1981 and he worked at TMPA. They were members of the Lions Club in Iola and members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in College Station. They moved to Karens in 2015 to be closer to family. A memorial service was held at the church in College Station. A celebration of life service was held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro, Minnesota. Remember his wife Janis and other family in your prayers.

There was a special in the Bryan Eagle on our local veterans. “Honoring our Veterans” that was in the Sunday paper. Among those was the story of Rev. Walter Herbert Richards who served in World War II. He spent 22 months and 15 days in the Navy completing five invasions in the Pacific aboard the amphibious cargo ship. On the ship the USS Alshain he manned the radar station. Following his discharge, he returned home Dec. 22, 1945, to his wife Margaret and 4-year old son in time for Christmas.

He was called to ministry and pastored several Free Will Baptist Churches including Evergreen Free Will Baptist. Their second child, Marilu was born in 1952. He and his wife were schoolteachers in Iola and other towns. He preached his final sermon at age 92 and is now 99. His wife died seven years ago.

The monthly meeting of the Keith Civic Club will be held Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Keith Community Center. This will be the final meeting of the year. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a covered dish meal followed by their business meeting. All are invited to attend.

There will be a bake sale at the Gibbons Creek Shell station on Highway 30, Saturday, Nov. 23, to raise money for the Keith Civic Club’s insurance and other club expense. The sale will begin around 9:30 a.m. Come out and support them. All money raised will be appreciated.

The monthly meeting of the Iola-North Zulch Order of the Eastern Star No 458 will be held at the Pyramind Masonic Lodge No 593 in North Zulch Monday, Nov. 25. The meeting will begin with a covered dish meal at 6:30 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 7:30 p.m. All members of the Eastern Star are invited to attend.

The Evergreen Baptist Church will have their Thanksgiving meal at the church Sunday, Nov. 24, following the service. All are invited to attend church at 11 a.m. and stay for lunch. Turkey and dressing will be provided, and everyone will bring the sides.
