Richards News

The place to be Thursday evening was the 2020 Grimes County Spelling Bee in Navasota. This year the spelling bee was held at Webb Elementary. I attended the Bee to watch my granddaughter Mattie, as she had placed in the Navasota Spelling Bee. I wasn’t completely sure what to expect so I went a little early. I was one of the first people there along with the lady working the door, and one other young man.

While visiting with the lady at the door, and the young man whose name was Brandon Franklin, I learned Brandon lived in Richards. Brandon was a contestant and represented Richards well finishing in fourth place. Good job Brandon and to all the students.

I was not the only proud grandmother at the spelling bee as Margaret Bailey of Richards also had her granddaughter, Adelia Holtey, participating.

Other contestants from Richards were Lily Bay and Sullivan Daniel.

A pamphlet was handed out introducing Grimes County’s Best Spellers of 2019-2020. If you happen to see any of these children mentioned tell them what a good job they did to make it to the top. Other students listed in this bee from Anderson Shiro: Madison DuChamp, Ananlia Hernandez, Racheal Nguyen, Judd Stuckey, Lila Wagner and Lela Weaver.

From Iola: Austin Cavillo, Joel Glass, Gavin Harris, AJ Pointer, Kylan Thomas and Audrey Wright. Navasota students were: Z’Ryiah Anderson, Mattie Blair, Robert Cosino, Christopher Pinedo Diosdado Laila Hernandez, Landen Jones, Emma Musick, Dulles Peralta, Daniel Supra and Naomi Supra. First place went to Christopher Pineda Diosdado, Navasota JH. A special thanks to The Navasota Kiwanis, Navasota ISD, and all the spelling bee coaches for making this possible.

Well the old Groundhog has declared that we will have an early spring! That is good news for all those who love being outdoors. Spring is such a beautiful time of year. I can hardly wait! I just hope he is right this year!

Sad news has once again hit our community. Sam B Wesolick, 67, of Richards passed away June 30, at M.D. Anderson Hospital. Please remember his sweet wife and family in your prayers. Sam was loved by many. Sam was a true gentleman and a very good man. Sam loved hunting and the outdoors. He will be missed by many!

A special birthday wish goes out this week to Kimberly Backus! Happy birthday Kim! Also, a special happy birthday to Carbon Smith.

Hope your week will be a safe and beautiful one!
