Lynn Grove 132-year Homecoming Oct. 16

A White Hall resident mentioned I should include historical facts in my column. Thus, I took a look at the Grimes County Historical Commission sites and decided since White Hall was not listed as a town, I would start with Yarboro. The following paragraph is copied from historical commission research. I hope you find this interesting. “Yarboro, TX. Yarboro, on Farm Road 1748 and the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in southern Grimes County, was founded about 1879 on a tract of land owned by James Quincy Yarborough, for whom the settlement was named. The nucleus of the community was the steam-powered gristmill and cotton gin constructed by Yarborough during the 1870’s. By 1884 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway had extended a line through the settlement, transforming it into a shipping point for cotton, cottonseed, and other agricultural produce. A post office had also been established by that date, with Yarborough as postmaster. About 1890 an influx of German immigrants brought a number of Lutherans to the vicinity; in 1893 the community’s first church, the Salem Lutheran congregation, was organized, and a combination home-school-meeting house was constructed in Yarboro. In 1884 the town had a population of thirty. By 1890 this figure had increased to seventy-five. At the peak of its development Yarboro had three general stores, a liquor store, a cotton gin, a train depot and telegraph office, and two schools. In 1936 the town had fifty residents and two accredited businesses. The post office was closed in 1953. By 1950 the population had declined to an estimated twenty, and no businesses remained. No population estimates have been available since 1969.”

The Salem Ladies Circle met Wednesday, Sept. 21, for a Bible study with Pastor Christians and the monthly meeting, with nine members present. The group discussed the Wreaths Across America project, Thanksgiving meal and the fall LWML meeting at Grace Lutheran in Brenham. Members of Salem are encouraged to come enjoy the fellowship at these meetings.

First Saturday is Oct. 1, for our BBQ sandwiches. We begin at 11 a.m. until we sell out. Oct. 3 is the business meeting and we welcome anyone who would like to become a firefighter or an auxiliary member.

There will be a selection of officers at the Oct. 6, quarterly business meeting for the White Hall Taxpayers Association. Please try to be present at this meeting.

Oct. 12 is the next Ladies Circle meeting, and this is also the month for elections.

Lynn Grove Methodist Church 132-year Homecoming is Oct. 16. Worship Service begins at 11 a.m. with a catered meal to follow. RSVP if attending on the church Facebook page or email, lynngroveumc@yahoo.com.

On Oct. 31, the fire station will open at 6 p.m. to enjoy ghosts and goblins. Please put this on your calendar to attend.

The American Legion offers a scholarship for high school students. If interested, contact Brenda Storey, 858-722-4970 for more information. She is trying to notify all schools in the county about this scholarship. School counselors may have the information.

Grimes County VFW Post 4006 offers the Patriot’s Pen and the Voice of Democracy. You can access online applications and instructions at vfwauxiliary. org and follow “what we do” and then to Scholarships and Contests. In addition, you can call me.
