Union Grove Baptist Church, 15301 FM 362 in Navasota is hosting a free Seed Starting Class as part of their Gardens of Faithfulness series taught by Samuel Robinson. This hands-on training will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, from 10 am until noon. Anyone from the area is welcome to attend this free event. Topics to be covered are seed germination, seed start dates, soil preparation, seed trays, etc. Questions can be sent to uniongrove362@gmail. com; no RSVP needed.

Union Grove Baptist’s youth group celebrated the end of summer with a pool party at the home of John and Sue Wimberly Friday, Aug. 12. Youth in attendance were Rebeca and Sarah Stratton, Averi and Izzy Seale, Orlando Spears, Ruby Sandlin, Gracie Haynes, and Daniel, Isaac and Andrew Robinson. The church is excited to announce that Samuel and Heather Robinson were recently named as youth pastors for the church. Special thanks to all who planned and donated food for the event. I had the nicest conversation this week with Mrs. Barbara Ethridge. I may have misspelled her name. This was my first time to speak with her and I sure hope that it is not my last.

The Sonshine Sisters domino game was fun, as usual. I got there later but I sure needed that bit of comic relief.

The Grimes County VFW Post 4006 met Thursday night for their regular monthly meeting. The Auxiliary side was full of information. On Sept. 10, the Auxiliary will have the opportunity to learn how to clean tombstones. This process will start at the Oakland Cemetery in Navasota at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. We hope to have as many people as possible to come and learn the process and then move to other cemeteries in the County and clean graves of veterans. If you want to learn and can take the project further, please come out. Bring your bucket and a soft brush, the cleaner will be donated.

On Sept. 16 beginning at 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony for the WWII memorial that has been relocated to the Justice Center, and recognize the beginning of Constitution Week and then celebrate the 75th anniversary of the American Legion McClusky Post 640 in Anderson. Cake will be provided for the public to finalize all the happenings. Please consider coming to support our county groups.

Well, summer vacation will be over soon and Friday night lights begin. I am not sure if I am ready for running the roads yet. I found out that Nelda Shive passed away Thursday, Aug. 18.
