Ernest Hemingway once said, “In order to write about life you must first live it.” Richards news has been missing for a while due to life being, well busy. But it’s nice to be back, and to share what our community has been busy doing.
Richards Methodist Church, 6639 FM 1486 in Richards, will host a spring concert April 3, at 12:30 p.m. featuring Angelo Mincey playing Mozart. The group will also have their annual Easter program at the church April 10, with their egg hunt and pizza lunch the following weekend, April 16 at 11 a.m. For more information call 979-574-3562.
Richards VFD has been busy responding to calls, exploring community responses from emergency planning surveys and utilizing new tools from Texas Forest Service to expedite service responses. This group of volunteers continue to put in 100% effort to ensure the community is well cared for. The group responded to three calls last week. Within those calls were a motor vehicle accident that included life flight response and a 17.5-acre grass fire that ended with assistance from Shiro VFD and Texas Forest Service. While conditions in the area continue to be fed with rain, grass fires occur due to dead foliage, strong winds and debris – all of which we are currently experiencing. Grimes County Animal Rescue will host their 2nd Annual “A Cause for Paws” event Saturday, March 26 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Grimes County Expo Center. The event serves as their largest fundraiser and works towards the groups main goal of building a permanent shelter and resource center for the county. The event will feature live music by the Derek Spence Band and will also showcase Derek Spence’s tribute to George Strait. Laura’s Bartending Service will handle the drinks and there will also be an auction. Tickets are $20 preorder and $25 at the door.
If you operate your own farm, you know that most of the work depends on you and the knowledge that you have. Grimes County AgriLife Extension is offering private applicator training March 25 at 9 a.m. The training will ensure both safety and best practices when utilizing pesticides to “produce agricultural commodities.” While this doesn’t apply to most of us when sprinkling ant granules or spraying for wasps. Those that have beef, poultry, hay production and utilize pesticides in large quantities need the training to ensure all pesticide handling follows safety guidelines. To RSVP call 936- 873-3907.
