On Saturday Maxine, Janis, Mrs. Verdell and I went to Katy for a district meeting for the VFW. The day started off very good until we followed the Google thing to find directions to the Post. We ended up at a metal gate to a pasture. At least we had a good laugh about it.

The meeting was good, and the State VFW President attended. We learned a few new things to do, had a decent lunch, picked up a couple of awards and certificates and Janis discovered a relative from Brenham. I think that was the highlight of the meeting. Those two ladies were hilarious and so excited to meet one another.

On Monday I had a doctor appointment again. I got tickled when I noticed that I had a text from Sheriff Sowell. When I told my doctor, the sheriff wanted me to call him, the look on her face was too funny. I decided it best to tell her that we were classmates and friends. I saw a sign of relief on her face.

Please keep the family of Mrs. Joyce Finke Leiber in your prayers as she passed away last week. Mrs. Joyce was my Aunt Norma Molitor’s younger sister.

Sept. 11 is Patriot’s Day and the Grimes VFW Post 4006 is hosting a breakfast for first responders beginning at 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. They will have a special program to recognize the 20th anniversary of 9/11. With everything happening in Afghanistan, this is a tough time for Americans, so joining others for a brief program may be best for many of us. There will be a dance that evening at the Post.

The Grimes VFW Post Auxiliary will collect socks this year to assist needy veterans. Janis will place a drop box at the Post to collect these. District 17 has a goal to collect 100,000 pairs. Can you help us out? If you can’t get to the post, I am sure we can arrange to assist you.

The last summer birthday cake has been made for my youngest grandchild, Chucky, who was 13 on Aug. 18. For some reason, it seems like he is a little old man rather than a new teenager, but I will accept the younger year for him. He will be an eighth-grader this year and hopefully band, karate and golf are still on his agenda.

Happy belated birthday to Mike Terrill who had a birthday on Aug. 7 and Pastor Lamb of Zion Lutheran who had a birthday Monday, Aug. 16.

The Sonshine Sisters were in rare form Thursday. The craziness was a stress reliever. We missed Kimberlee and Marilyn who couldn’t make it. If you want to come and need to ask a question, please feel free to call me.

The Grimes VFW Post 4006 and Auxiliary met Thursday night for the meal and business meeting. Our Commander, Tony Lambert, has moved to East Texas for a better job and his wife landed a better teaching job also. I will miss him. His last words to me were concerning his Baptist prayers. It is our joke, nothing critical about this religion.

The Post voted and installed a new commander, Hal Reed, to complete the current year. Some of you may not know him but he is on the veteran’s talk show on our local radio station with Mr. Carl Dry. Commander Reed also assists veterans and families with obtaining correct forms for benefits, burial instructions, etc. This is a topic that is sometimes difficult, but Commander Reed has the knowledge to assist for all veterans.

If you are an Elvis fan, keep reading my column. I heard there may be an Elvis show coming to Grimes County in the future.
