Iola graduates honored at local services

Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church had record attendance Sunday, May 19, as they honored seniors graduating from high school during their morning worship service. A total of 115 people attended the service.

The graduating seniors that were honored are Edward James “Quinn” Costello IV, Landry Rain Cunningham, Andrew Doyle England, Garrett Lee Inmon, Randy Hoyett Johnson, Cody Ryan Ozbolt, Adam Marie Roberts, Heather Michelle Estell Stephens and Jaggar Mason Vaughn.

Gifts were presented to the graduates and hamburgers, hot dogs and cake were served following the service.

The Zion Cemetery near Iola had a historical marker dedication Saturday, May 18. The cemetery dates to early 1850. Betty Lunsford was instrumental in the research for the historical marker. The marker sits near the location of the original log cabin church.

Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth III and historical commission chairman Joe King Fultz were in attendance. Zion United Methodist Church pastor Charlie Ray, cemetery association president Charles Wendt and Iola band director Amy Johnson were all in attendance. There was an honor guard and flag presentation ceremony. Refreshments were served at the church following the ceremony.

The monthly meeting of the Orphan’s Friend Masonic Lodge No 17 will meet at their lodge hall in Anderson, Monday, June 3, beginning with a covered dish meal at 6 p.m. and meeting following at 6:30 p.m.

The Bedias Masonic Lodge No 651 will have its monthly meeting Tuesday, June 4. A covered dish meal will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a gospel singing Saturday, June 8, at the Carlos Missionary Baptist Church beginning at 6 p.m. All that love good singing are welcome to attend. Following the singing will be a time of fellowship over a covered dish meal.

County Road 174 has been converted back to a gravel road. The pavement had begun to deteriorate and was in bad shape. I wish it could have been repaved.

The baccalaureate service held Wednesday, May 22, at Iola Missionary Baptist Church honoring the Iola High School class of 2019 was a great success. The church was filled with seniors and guest. Dr. Tim Owens preached an inspiring message and seniors were presented with bibles.

Happy birthday to Katherine Ann Noble Martin and Jamie Sue Altimore- May 26; Brody Michael Rice, Chloe Vaughn and Mark Niven- May 27; Gwendolyn Rose Flynt, Barbara Snider and Cash Buzz Childress- May 28; Nash Murray- May 30; and Cameron Eric Mallerd-June 1. I hope your special day was a happy one.

Happy anniversary to Mitchell and Elaine Coneley Beene, married May 31, 1969. Wishing you many more years of happiness together.
