The roofing project at Navasota’s First United Methodist Church has had a lot of people looking to the Heavens this past week. According to contractor Todd Willhite of AA Roofing, the sight of his crew scaling the sharp angular sanctuary roof that is 50-60 feet high has caught the attention of a lot of locals.

Wilhite said the church is replacing the 1962 asbestos tile on the sanctuary with a steel metal product.

The roof’s 16/12 pitch, which Wilhite described “as almost straight up in the air,” has not been without its challenges, and among those have been 20,000 nail heads to flatten and the wind, which required 12 men to lay down the moisture barrier.

Wilhite said, “It’s a skilled trade to install this kind of roof.”

And it would appear those with a fear of heights need not apply!
