Local wrecks claimed the lives of two area residents Thursday and Friday, Aug. 15 and 16. Joseph Bihms, age 58, of Navasota and Craig Allen Sweed, age 55, of Washington lost their lives in separate incidents.

Thursday, Aug. 15

According to Sergeant Jimmy Morgan of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Bihms was traveling westbound at approximately 3:18 p.m. on Texas State Highway 105 near Plantersville. Bihms was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado and towing a 2003 box trailer.

Bihms reportedly veered to the right on the grassy shoulder and attempted to steer back onto the roadway. Upon doing so the trailer fishtailed causing him to lose control of the vehicle and enter the ditch where his truck and trailer overturned.

Bihms was pronounced deceased on scene. His passenger and son Jordan Bihms, age 23, was treated and released.

Morgan said the investigation is ongoing.

Friday, Aug. 16

At approximately 6 a.m. Sweed lost his life in a motorcycle accident in Navasota. Navasota Police Chief Shawn Myatt reported that Sweed was traveling northbound on Texas State Highway 6, just past Hwy 105 east.

A pickup struck the back of Sweed’s motorcycle causing him to crash. Sweed was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Myatt said no citations were issued and the investigation is ongoing.
