NISD Elementary schools help with supplies

Preparing for the new school year is strenuous for many parents especially with rising costs. Elementary school parents of Navasota Independent School District students have a shorter supply list thanks to federal funding.

Title I-A designated campuses received overage funding amounts. NISD elementary campuses – Brule, John C. Webb and High Point were notified of the funds late this spring. Elementary school principals discussed ways to utilize the money and decided providing school supplies best serves students and the community.

“We were so thankful for the smaller school supply list,” said Keley Barrientos, whose daughter Avery attends Webb. “I know this helps everyone. We appreciate Navasota ISD and everything they do for our children.”

Title I, Part A is a federal grant program to work towards improving basic programs operated by local education agencies through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015, providing supplemental funding to state and local educational agencies to acquire additional education resources at schools serving high concentrations of students from low-income homes. These resources are used to improve the quality of education programs and ensure students from low-income families have opportunities to meet challenging state assessments.

Another Webb parent, Rachel Reyes, doesn’t mind purchasing extra supplies for students who may need them throughout the year. “I love the smaller supply list. It’s awesome,” she said.

“However, I am one of those parents who will ask the teacher all year if she needs anything for the kids. I don’t mind sending supplies for the classroom.”

An August 2022 article released by WFAA shared families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $864 on school supplies. Additionally, WFAA shares families grappling with record- high inflation make buying school supplies for the new school year painful.

Navasota Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Learning said the district recently released a public input survey to gather feedback and ideas for federal programs to better meet the needs of the local community.
