Find out the skateboarding and bicycling hotspots Navasota offers.

Highlights from Grilling Stafford – episode 53.

Our neighborhood has no sidewalks, and the streets are too rough for skateboarding and roller skating. Are there parks where I can skateboard and roller skate? “There sure is. We do have the skate park which is on Brule Street. It is right in front of the Navasota Center. It is a great place. My wife and my daughter skated there this weekend. You can also go to Hillside Park and skate around the walking trail there as well. It is fairly smooth. It is smoother than a street.”

On Sundays some of the downtown parking lots are empty and look good but is it legal to ride bikes and or skateboard there? “They can ride bikes and skateboard. Now skateboarders need to be careful. The reason there is a skate park is because if you’re going to try to do tricks where you jump up on curbs, trashcans or whatever, we’re not going to appreciate that. But get out there and have a little fun as long as you are not in the way and as long as people can still park.”

What about a quiet neighborhood street? “Sure. I mean that is perfectly fi ne. It happens a lot of times that people are riding up and down. I ride my own bike up and down the street and a lot of other people do. Be careful, you know bicycles must obey the same traffic laws as automobiles. People need to be careful. Don’t take chances and get hurt.”

Will the proposed shared use paths allow roller skating and skateboarding? “Sure will. That is what it is all about – shared use. Multimode of transportation and that can be anything. Skates and skateboards are a mod of transportation for some.”

I didn’t grow up in Navasota but when I was a kid an ice cream truck would come through the neighborhood. In the distance you could hear the music it played, giving you time to go get money from your parents. Are there any ice cream trucks here? “I’ve seen a couple different ice cream trucks in town over the years. We’ve had them every year I have been here. I think it was just a few weeks ago I heard one in my neighborhood. My neighbors across the street came running out and bought some ice cream.”

How many canine officers and police dogs does the city have? “None.”
