Elizabeth Gaetz Kowis, a loving caring grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully April 2, 2022, at the age of 101 at Golden Creek Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Navasota.

A gather of family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 8227 CR 205 at FM 1774, in Plantersville. A parish rosary will begin at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Edward C. Kucera, Jr. as the celebrant. The rite of committal will follow in St. Mary’s Church Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Hayden Bridges, Eugen Gaetz, Ronnie Gaetz, Alvin Swonke, Donald Swonke and Keith Wischnewsky. Named as an honorary pallbearer is Noah Bridges. Elizabeth was born on

Elizabeth was born on August 5, 1920 in Chenango (Angleton), Texas to Frank and Katie Faeth Gaetz. She married Joe Willie Kowis on June 14, 1941. They were blessed with a daughter, Betty Jo Kowis on August 28, 1958.

Elizabeth picked cotton with her family in her younger years. She moved to the Heights in Houston and went to work for an envelope company on North Main. From there she worked at Airline Venetian Blind Company followed by Hamilton Jr. High School where she retired after 17 years. She also helped her brother Joe on weekends at his restaurant.

After retiring in 1984 Elizabeth and Joe moved back to her family property in Plantersville. They joined St. Mary Catholic Church, and Elizabeth went on to join St. Mary Altar Society, where she is a lifetime member and also St. Mary Guardian Angels Senior Group where she loved playing bingo and dominoes. Elizabeth was also a part of the Women’s Rosary Prayer Group. She was an avid domino player at Plantersville Volunteer Fire Department and she loved her domino family. She was very pleased to be appointed Honorary Sheriff of Grimes County on her 100th birthday.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe Willie Kowis; beloved daughter, Betty Jo Kowis Syzdek, great grandson, Connor Mason Bridges; caring parents, Frank and Katie Goetz; siblings, Eva Gaetz Wischnewsky, Josephine Gaetz Swonke, Mike Gaetz and Joseph Martin Gaetz.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Britt Elizabeth Syzdek Bridges Rogers and Benjamin Joseph Syzdek; three great grandchildren, Hayden Matthew Bridges, Noah Ashton Bridges and Kayleigh Marie Syzdek along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

The family would like to thank everyone for all the cares and visits from her family and many friends while she was in Golden Creek. Thanks to all the staff at Golden Creek Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Remarkable Hospice and Dr. Prihoda, her family physician for the last 38 years.

Elizabeth will be missed, but not forgotten.
