Robert Moore’s history in Texas dates back at least to 1836 when he was with Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto. He apparently became a friend of Houston, as the family history claims Houston spent weeks at a time with the Moore family at Washington on the Brazos. Moore was granted a league of land in Bell County for his San Jacinto service.

The Grimes County Senior Center will hold their annual fundraiser Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the center, 129 S. Main St. in Anderson. A hot dog lunch including chips, dessert and a drink will be served from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. A one hot dog lunch is $10, and a two hot dog lunch is $12. There will also be a silent auction and raffle. Tickets are $5 for a book of six tickets. Raffle drawing will be held at 2 p.m. For more information call the center, 936-873-2818.

Read moreThe annual Bruce Family Reunion was held at Keith Community Center Sunday, Nov. 6, with approximately 50 family members and friends attending. Areunion was enjoyed by all. The covered dish meal was good as always. Some attendees were descendants of the late Melvin and Edna Bruce. Their daughter, Cora Lucas, was the last of their children still living. Following the meal, there was an auction of a variety of items that will help fund future reunions.

Read moreThe first known burial in the Farquhar Cemetery is that of Colonel James R. Cooke. In late March of 1843, Cook was shot dead by a close friend in an argument over a horse on the street of Washington on the Brazos. Cooke had come to raw Texas in the early 1830s, fought at San Jacinto as a first lieutenant in Captain Henry Wax Karnes’s cavalry. In August 1842, he received a commission from Sam Houston to recruit volunteers in Washington County for the Somervell Expedition, serving as a colonel in the offensive at Laredo and Guerrero that December. Though disagreeing with Somervell’s decision not to cross the Rio Grande in pursuit of the Mexicans, Cooke did return to San Antonio before disbanding.
