So why did he come to Texas as a farmer securing a land grant in the very eastern edge of what would become Grimes County? He acquired his grant March 4, 1833. A footnote on page 166 of E. L. Blair’s “Early History of Grimes County” relating the Abraham Zuber early years in Texas, refers to Zuber’s son stating the reason “his father changed from a merchant to a farmer in 1816 was that his wife, Mary Ann Mann, whom he married, Feb. 16, 1816, inherited from her grandfather, Robert Deshazo, a ‘lot of valuable negroes,’ which enabled his father to become a farmer of considerable importance.”

Read moreThere was a special wedding ceremony Saturday, Oct. 1, for Katie Compian and Michael De-Haven. They were united in marriage at Evergreen Baptist Church by Rev. Jeff Morgan. The bride was escorted by her father, Charlie Wendt. There were other family members in attendance from both sides of the family. A reception was held in Bryan. Join me in wishing them many years of happiness together. Area residents were sorry to learn of the death of David Alton Pyle who passed away Monday, Sept. 26, in Stephenville. He was born Sept. 13, 1927 in Iola, the son of Neal M. and Steele Carnes Pyle. There was a visitation Sept. 30 at a Stephenville funeral home. The service was held in the Concord Cemetery and conducted by Rev. Tim Owens, the pastor of Iola Missionary Baptist Church. He was the last of his brothers and sisters.
