Public hearings preceding two zoning change requests elicited a number of resident comments at the April 13 Regular Meeting of the Navasota Planning & Zoning Commission.

Following a public hearing, commissioners approved James and Dorothy Hassell’s zoning change request for1.310-acres along CR 424, property approved for annexation by the Navasota city council Feb. 13.
Development Services Director Lupe Diosdado explained that annexed properties are automatically zoned A/O: Agriculture/Open Space District. Hassell requested a zoning change from A/O to Pecan Lakes Estates Phase 3 PUD (Planned Unit Development) for the development of 4-6 single dwelling residences.

No decision was reached regarding the three most discussed buildings – the former county clerk’s building on Main Street, the vacant Anderson annex on W. The old county clerk’s office is the site of the original First Bank of Anderson and the object of a tug-of-war between the Grimes County Historical Commission and the Elections Department following the hire of Elections Administrator Rachel Walker.

The Homesite team won first place and Will Abraham earned first place high individual. Brooklyn Byars laced fifth, Hannah Abraham sixth and Rome Rivera 10th. The Land team placed third overall. Individual results: Hayden Zimmerman, sixth, Hannah Wawarofsk, 10th and Emberly Hulsman, 15th. Both of these teams qualified for the State CDE contest April 27, at Tarleton State University. The Ag Engineering team advanced to State with a second-place finish at Blinn College. At the State contest they placed 18th.

Navasota Garden Club presents the April Yard of the Month to Anita and Keny Simpson for their yard at 1701 Stone Ridge in Navasota. The yard features front beds with Queen Ferns, Esperanza, potato vines, Mandevilla, Petunias, Norfolk Pine, V. Ginger, rose bushes and Mexican Heather. The exquisitely manicured lawn features a 20-foot pecan tree.
