The Houston Astros pulled off an impressive win in the recent World Series, taking four of six games against the overachieving Philadelphia Phillies. Still experiencing blowback from the cheating scandal that will forever be linked to the Astros’ 2017 World Series win, they took this series without any hint of controversy.

Read moreWhen my wife and I bought our house in Navasota we needed to fence in the yard for our dogs. I was insistent about putting in a white picket fence because it had always been a vision of mine to have a white picket fence on a nice quiet street in a great small town. Something like “Leave it to Beaver” always came to mind. I got my wish, but with one string attached – I had to paint it. No problem, I thought. I’ve painted many, many things and this is just one more paint job. Well, I was wrong about that.
Read moreLast week while watching a conservative streaming channel, I heard a statement that I can’t get out of my head - our United States Constitution is what makes us “citizens” instead of “subjects.” If you’re unclear as to the difference, “Subject is derived from the Latin words, sub and jacio, and means one who is under the power of another; but a citizen is a unit of a mass of free people, who, collectively, possess sovereignty.”

For example, I was on my way back home from an appointment in Houston one day and I could see a guy weaving in and out of traffic behind me. As a considerate driver I did not stand in his way as he passed me, but when he attempted to pass the car in front of me the back end of his car glanced off the front end of the car he was passing. This caused him to spin out and he hit the concrete barrier on the right, overcorrected, and hit the concrete barrier on the left totaling the car. I don’t know where he was going, but I’m sure he was not going to be on time. All of this just to save a few minutes, or seconds. What a waste.
Read moreI enjoyed the recent Fall Festival hosted by Navasota’s First Presbyterian Church. It was a first for the church, just as their monthlong pumpkin patch is a first for Navasota, and it made me nostalgic for the Helms Elementary Halloween Carnivals I went to growing up in Houston. Halloween Carnivals went by the wayside by the time my children started school in 1972.
Read moreI remember at the beginning of the COVID saga the story of a cruise ship that was stuck between ports amidst an evolving pandemic. This was back in February 2020 when many hadn’t grasped the full potential of the virus, nor the manner by which it would spread.
