Black History Month

February is Black History Month. During the decades of the 20th century, it was commonly presumed that African American people had little history besides slavery. It is clear African Americans have significantly impacted the development of the social, political and economic structures of the United States and the world. Documenting African Americans History and educating the public were both vitally important ingredients to the progress of race relations and the progression of the lives of African Americans.

Credit for the evolving awareness of the true place of African Americans in History can in large be bestowed on one man, Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of Black History.” Woodson (1875-1950) was the son of former slaves. He noticed the lack of attention paid to African Americans in the History books and in 1926, Dr. Woodson initiated the celebration of Negro History Week which corresponded with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976. This celebration was expanded to include the entire month of February. Today Black History Month is supported throughout the country as people of all ethnic and social backgrounds discuss the African American experience. We need to understand our past in order to live today and create a future. What you do today will make history tomorrow!
