Grimes County VFW Post 4006 held their annual breakfast Sept. 9 for first responders of the county. I know it is difficult for employees in this line of work to come, but I am happy we can accommodate some of them. This year we opened it to the public for a small charge and we had some stop by. If you didn’t come, you missed some really good homemade biscuits and gravy made by none other than Chef Jim. He is a Vietnam veteran, was in law enforcement and a chef.

Friday night lights recognized first responders. I visited with Sheriff Sowell that morning at the Post breakfast and told him I should go on the field too. I didn’t, but I did wear our VFD dress shirt and waved at the sheriff from the stands. Please keep the Welch family in your prayers. Shawn suffered a medical condition last weekend. Cindy, Eric, Anna, Lauren and family would appreciate extra people praying for Shawn. The Frenzel family suffered a loss, Mrs. Lynette passed away at age 97. She was a strong, self-sufficient lady. Dennis, Janis, Robert, Brady and the remaining family members could use some extra prayers. WHCVFD met Monday for their monthly meeting with 19 members present. The meeting was short but informative. The department has already had more fire calls and there was a structure fire last week. We were excited to hear we received a surprise $500 donation from a local bank.

I missed a very important birthday this week, my friend Chad McMillan. I do know how old he is but I will not share that information! Happy belated birthday, Chad.

Last Thursday was a big day for me. It began with the Sonshine Sisters dominoes, which is always so much fun, and ended with the Grimes County VFW Post meetings. Both the Post and Auxiliary had their yearly inspections. The Auxiliary members were a bit leery about what would happen and if we were prepared. We were, and the District President was great to work with. Thank you, Madam President Byrne.

First Saturday will be on Oct. 1 for our BBQ sandwich sale. We generally begin at 11 a.m. until we sell out. Oct. 3 will be the business meeting and we welcome anyone who would like to either become a firefighter or an auxiliary member.

On Oct. 31, the station will be open at 6 p.m. to enjoy the ghosts and goblins. Please put this on your calendar to attend.

The Oct. 6 quarterly business meeting for the White Hall Taxpayers Association will also be the time for election of officers. Please try to be present at this meeting.

The American Legion offers a scholarship for high school students. If you are interested in knowing more, contact Brenda Storey, 858722-4970. She is trying to notify all the schools in the county about this scholarship; therefore, your counselors may have the information.

Grimes County VFW Post 4006 offers the Patriot’s Pen and the Voice of Democracy scholarships. You can access these online applications and instructions at vfwauxiliary.org and follow “what we do” and then to scholarships and contests. In addition, you can call me.

Please add all our sick and homebound friends to your prayer list. These friends include Mary Martin, Leon Gorney, Barbara Gorney, Lois Bell, Jean Fleischhauer, Margaret Schultz, Sue Kolojaco, Mary Bauer, Rosa Finke, Marilyn Frenzel, Delores Mitschke, Mary Whatley, Billie Wittenbach, Gabriel Goode, Mr. and Mrs. Rimes, Pastor Schultz, and Lawrence Finke.
