Being a WHCVFD auxiliary member, I know smoke is normally not a good thing, however smoke is okay at football games when it happens around the blow-up huts the football players run through. I have seen several colors, but last Friday orange was the color and the first attempt for the smoke failed. That was actually not okay as Bree got the canister and started running to get it to blow out. Knowing how accident-prone she is, it was a fearful few moments. I was the happy halftime attempt worked well except for all the people coughing as the wind blew smoke toward the Yeguas team fans. Have you figured out who purchased the smoke?

Watching the Yeguas 13 players who ran those U.S. flags downfield prior to the game gave me goosebumps.

Saturday, Sept. 11 – Patriot Day, is a day our country will never forget. Since becoming an auxiliary member, Carl Dry makes sure to support first responders with breakfast. Our usual attendance tends is 60, but this year was different. Sheriff Sowell warned me the deputies were stretched so attendance may be lower. A couple of Navasota Police Department and fire department members attended. Other than that, Iola VFD sent three members and I was the lone one from White Hall. I was disappointed in the attendance, but I also accept that there were many events going on. We had a great 20-year remembrance program which included a table for our recent 13 military members who lost their lives and a beautiful memorial table for 9/11. The Commander’s wife, Nicole, made plaques listing the names of all lives lost for both. Connie Clements of The Examiner and three members of the Pocahontas Society of CAR also attended. Thanks to each of them and to the parents who brought them to help.

The Grimes VFW Post 4006 Auxiliary is still participating in the 100,000 pair of socks challenge for veterans and people in hospitals/nursing homes. District 17 has 10 auxiliaries and we are working with them. If you wish to donate, please let me know or take donations to the Post. Thank you.

The WHCVFD met Monday, Sept. 13, for their monthly business meeting. Twenty-two members and three prospects attended. It was great to see people filing applications to become members. It appears we are closer to acquiring all documentation needed to use the house donated to the fire department for training. Chief Vickers said the electrical work is complete in the newly added bay for our water rescue boat. I am pleased to report that Training Instructor Christopher Vickers and trainee, Bobby Marinkovich took the rescue boat, bottled water and chain saws to Louisiana to assist after Hurricane Ida. They were well received, and the water was appreciated. Their trip didn’t actually include taking the boat out, but they cleared roadways, downed trees and other duties using their chain saws. It is awesome that our little county VFD was able to assist our neighbors.

Happy birthday again to our fire department Chaplain, Chad McMillan. His participation with the department is appreciated.

Dave Kemp has come back to White Hall and is joining the VFD. He has extensive experience that will be good for the department. Welcome back, Dave.

Sonshine Sisters was fun Thursday. Even if not in a good mood, by the time you leave your face hurts from laughing. I look forward to our time together.

Grimes VFW Post 4006 and Auxiliary both had their district inspections prior to the monthly business meeting. I have no clue what that does to the commander, but I get nervous even knowing we have followed all the rules. Everything was good, and we received many compliments from the District President. Thanks to all the members who came out to support our auxiliary.
