Iola News

The third annual PTO carnival is Monday, Oct. 28, from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m. There will be games, prizes, food and a silent auction. This is a great time for families, so come out to Iola Elementary and get ready for some fun!

Have you heard of the newest store to hit Iola? The Mercantile at Main St. Market is now open and ready for business. The store is made of 20 different vendors with more to come. The hours of operation are Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. I was able to visit last week and there are some amazing finds. Available for purchase are antiques, furniture, clothing and home décor. One vendor available makes custom wood end tables. In the front of the shop are some truly unique air plants with metal, wood and glass elements. The store has so many neat things. Robin, the owner, was so kind and helpful and makes you feel right at home as soon as you walk through the doors. I also found the pieces to be very reasonably priced. This would be a great place to pick up some gifts for the holidays.

The ninth annual Iola Hay Day festival hosted by the Io-la Community center will be Oct. 19 . The morning will kick off at 8 a.m. with the Bulldog Dash, followed by the parade at 9:30 a.m. After the parade there will be a costume contest, car show, Jr. Aggie Wranglers, chili cook off and lots of venders for shopping and food. There will also be live music by Indian and The Jones Band. If you have never attended, I would highly recommend doing so, this is a wonderful day for the whole family. Registration for the Bulldog Dash 5k run/ walk will open at 7 a.m. at the Iola Fire Station. The fee is $25. To receive a T-shirt, registration must be received by Oct. 7. Forms are in the high school office.

There is a raffle for a signed 2017 Jose Altuve World Series jersey. Tickets are $5 each or $20 for five. The fundraiser is for Iola Athletic booster club. The drawling will be held at the final Iola home game against Bartlett Nov. 8.

Homecoming is Friday. Varsity football will host Chilton at 7 p.m.

Junior varsity and varsity volleyball will host North Zulch with games starting at 4 p.m.
