County budget wrangle concludes

After what may be the most controversial budget season in recent years, Grimes County Commissioners Court approved the 2023-24 budget and tax rate at its Sept. 6 Regular Meeting. After public hearings which elicited citizen comments about salary inequities for women and law enforcement, commissioners passed both the $36,337,773.55 balanced budget and the $0.450339 per $100 valuation tax rate with 4-1 record votes. Pct. 2 Commissioner David Tullos cast the dissenting votes.

City folk to pay for what they get

Despite heavy attendance at the Sept. 11 Regular Meeting of the Navasota City Council, residents had no comment for or against the City’s proposed $43,788,755 budget during the required public hearing. Having viewed the detailed budget presentation before, followed by vigorous discussion at the Aug. 28 workshop, council moved quickly to approve the first reading of Ordinance No. 1029-23, adopting the FY 202324 budget with a show-of-hands record vote.

Rapid rail whiplash in the Brazos Valley

On Monday, Sept. 11, an impassioned group of citizens, voters, and elected officials gathered at the Truman Kimbro Convention Center in Madisonville to hear from Texans Against High-Speed Rail (TAHSR). As the name implies, this event was scheduled to go over the most recent developments in the long battle TAHSR has been fighting against the government, Amtrak, and other entities involved in the High-Speed Rail project from Houston to Dallas.
