140th Anniversary at Zion Lutheran Sunday

The St. Stanislaus Bazaar was a huge success with a record-breaking crowd. The day was picture perfect. Thanks to all who volunteered in various ways, made desserts, worked booths, attended and supported this parish in any way. Abraham Zuber, merchant or farmer?

Abraham Zuber, before coming to Texas in the early 1830s, seemed to be a foot loose merchant relocating in different states about every 2 years. So why did he come to Texas as a farmer securing a land grant in the very eastern edge of what would become Grimes County? He acquired his grant March 4, 1833. A footnote on page 166 of E. L. Blair’s “Early History of Grimes County” relating the Abraham Zuber early years in Texas, refers to Zuber’s son stating the reason “his father changed from a merchant to a farmer in 1816 was that his wife, Mary Ann Mann, whom he married, Feb. 16, 1816, inherited from her grandfather, Robert Deshazo, a ‘lot of valuable negroes,’ which enabled his father to become a farmer of considerable importance.”

October Yard of the Month

Navasota Garden Club presented the October Yard of the Month award to Steve and Stacy Hymel for their home at 706 Church Street. Their beautiful landscaping features Dusty Miller, White Vinca, White Verbena, White African Iris and Star of Jasmine. Stacy designed a beautiful bed around the fountain with Japanese Sledge grass. They also planted a maple tree.

Pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere at fall event!

While the temperatures don’t feel like autumn yet, Navasota First Presbyterian Church’s Fall Festival and Pumpkin Patch Saturday, Oct. 8, helped residents get in the spirit of the season! Attendees enjoyed games, music, baked goods, photo booths and face-painting provided by Navasota’s newest artist in residence, Sara Nevius. A popular event which drew many onlookers and participants was the corn eating contest. The pumpkin patch is open daily through Oct. 31, at the corner of Nolan and Holland streets. Proceeds will be donated to Christian Community Center in Navasota.

ANNA CREAGOR SPRINGFIELD 1932 – 2022

Anna Creagor Springfield, 89, of Navasota, passed away October 3, 2022, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in College Station. Visitation was held Friday, October 7, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Nobles Funeral Chapel. Funeral services was held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Nobles Funeral Chapel with Dr. Clark Springfield officiating. Interment followed Oakland Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
