Gooch competes at State Cross country meet

Iola junior Lindsey Gooch was one of 151 girls that competed at the 2A Girls State Cross Country Meet at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock Friday, Nov. 4. Gooch placed 39th with a time of 13:42.1. Emily Pharris of Shelbyville placed first with a time of 12:33.2.

How ‘bout them Astros! Not only was the last game of the 2022 World Series exciting, it was equally exciting to see an Anderson native on TV. Stephanie (Kimich) Burzynski and son Hagan just happened to be on one of the “fan clips” throughout the evening. Stephanie is the daughter of Ricky and Debby Kimich.

Large attendance at Evergreen Fall Festival

Keith Civic Club held their monthly meeting Thursday, Oct. 27, at Keith Community Center with a small group of members and visitors attending. The covered dish meal was enjoyed by all. A variety of business was discussed during the meeting including discussing a new roof bid. Hopefully the money will be raised soon. The death of longtime member, Ruby Lavender Stuckey who passed away Sunday, Oct. 23, was mentioned. The garage sale was also discussed.

First burials in Farquhar Cemetery

The first known burial in the Farquhar Cemetery is that of Colonel James R. Cooke. In late March of 1843, Cook was shot dead by a close friend in an argument over a horse on the street of Washington on the Brazos. Cooke had come to raw Texas in the early 1830s, fought at San Jacinto as a first lieutenant in Captain Henry Wax Karnes’s cavalry. In August 1842, he received a commission from Sam Houston to recruit volunteers in Washington County for the Somervell Expedition, serving as a colonel in the offensive at Laredo and Guerrero that December. Though disagreeing with Somervell’s decision not to cross the Rio Grande in pursuit of the Mexicans, Cooke did return to San Antonio before disbanding.

Grimes County voters showed up early to take advantage of early voting in the 2022 November General Election, with 529 ballots cast Monday, Oct. 24.

The Navasota City Council approved nearly a dozen new faces to serve on its boards and commissions at the Monday, Oct. 24, meeting. The new appointees will be notified by City Secretary Susie Homeyer during the coming week.

Commissioners revise facility rentals

Grimes County Maintenance Director Rodney Floyd presented proposed changes to the facilities rental contract to commissioners during regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday, Oct. 19. The proposed changes were written by Floyd, Grimes County Pct. 4 Commissioner Phillip Cox and Grimes County Attorney John Fultz.
